Childrens Services
The library supports lifelong learning and encourages people to visit the library well before they read "words". Material is provided from board books for babies to the fiction and nonfiction reading needs of 0 - 12 year old people. Recommendations and advice is freely available from staff.

  • Baby Book Kits...

    Every child born at Gisborne Hospital receives a kit that includes advice for parents about suitable books for babies, a list of support groups for parents, books for parents about babies and parenting, some popular nursery rhymes and an invitation to visit from the librarians of H.B. Williams Memorial Library.

  • Books For Reading: Age 0 - 11 Years...

    Varied spine marking denotes different reading interest and / or ability.
    Spine Mark:
    ABC BlockPreschoolers picture / board books.
    Yellow SpotPicture books (all ages).
    Smiley FaceNew readers who still need help.
    (recommended 5-6 years)

  • Maori Text Stories For Children...

    Storybooks for children of all ages written in Maori language (Te Reo Maori) are available for loan. Staff attempt to buy all material on the market even if it is not written in local dialect.

    Bedtime Stories - Children arrive dressed in pyjamas clutching a special toy ready to listen to favorite stories.

    July School Holiday - Young Unity Theatre dramatise stories.

    Other School Holidays - Storytelling sessions and book orientated crafts.

    Visits from book characters.

    Visits from childrens authors and storytellers.
  • School Visits

    Library skills programmes are available on a monthly or term basis, directed by Children's Librarians. Rural schools may visit less frequently. Prior bookings are essential.
