Materials held in this department are available for use because of their historical value or their up-to-date current value. All research must be done within the library although a photocopier is available. Reference enquiries may be sent to the library via fax, email, telephone or by post. Materials include encyclopaedias, directories, maps, statistics, New Zealand and some international newspapers, motor manuals and current Gisborne District Council Meeting agendas.

  • Balneavis Collection...

    Raumoana Balneavis was secretary to Sir Apirana Ngata and an avid collector of Maori and Pacific books. The collection was originally gifted to the then Maori Affairs Department but later transferred to this library. Includes the journals of the Polynesian Society (1894 - ). New books and important older books are sourced to keep the collection both historically and currently significant.

    Local newspapers from 19th century, shipping lists, land deed indexes, family histories, tribal Whakapapa, genealogical research directories, electoral rolls, military records and periodicals are amongst the items to assist with family research.

  • Gisborne District Council Agendas...

    Agendas for the forthcoming meetings of all Gisborne District Council Committees are available for perusal. Retrospective copies of Community Development Department agendas are held in stock.

  • Government Publications...

    The library is a depository library for selected NZ Government Publications. Includes Statutes and Regulations, the Education Gazette, Census Statistics, Parliamentary Debates and the NZ Gazette.

  • Interloans...

    Books and periodical articles not held by this library may be loaned from other NZ libraries where available. Please provide as many publication details as possible.

  • Kiwinet and NZBN

    Databases hosted and maintained by the National Library of New Zealand. NZBN (New Zealand Bibliographic Network) contains information about all books published in NZ and includes some overseas bibliographic databases. Used mainly by staff to source cataloguing details or to verify information to interloan books from other libraries. Kiwinet contains references to NZ periodical and newspaper items, parliamentary information, company information includes some full text databases. The library may obtain articles from other NZ libraries. These databases will be superceded in 1996 by NDIS - a much improved selection of databases hosted by National Libraries of New Zealand and Australia.

    Books, vertical file material, retrospective copies of Gisborne newspapers, periodical articles covering both Maori and European histories of the Gisborne District.

  • Maori Reference Material...

    Covering local and national tribal areas and people, includes some unpublished theses, material about Treaty of Waitangi and current claims, Turton's land deals, Whakapapa, periodicals and books kept in Balneavis Collection.

  • The Savage Music Collection...

    The vast collection of music which had belonged to the Gisborne Savage Club was presented to the library in 1981. The content of this collection of orchestral music (c. 2000 pieces) reflects the character of the orchestra - emphasis on short pieces appropriate to a slot in an evenings entertainment. Includes few symphonies, a large selection of overtures, under suites, marches, music from popular shows, vocal and chamber music, and patriotic and war music.
